What Are Deep Pocket Sheets? A Simple Fit Guide

What Are Deep Pocket Sheets Exactly?

A deep pocket sheet is a fitted sheet with taller side walls; sounds pretty simple, right? The "pocket" part is the fabric that wraps down the sides of your mattress and tucks underneath it. Standard fitted sheets are cut for thinner mattresses, whereas deep pocket sheets add extra fabric so the sheet can actually reach all the way around a taller bed.

So, why is this even a thing? Well, over the years mattresses have gotten a lot thicker. You have your pillow tops, hybrid coil systems, and extra comfort layers that all add height. Then, plenty of people add a topper and a protector on top of that, and you end up with sheets that just don't seem to work anymore.

When the pocket is too shallow, the elastic can't grab the underside of the mattress. That's when you get snapping corners, bunched fabric, and a bottom sheet that creeps toward the middle of the bed. Deep pocket fitted sheets fix that by giving the elastic enough room to do its job.

How Bed Sheet Pocket Depth Is Measured

Bed sheet pocket depth is the distance from the top seam of the sheet down to the elastic edge. More often than not, brands usually list it in inches on the product page or packaging pages. In fact, it's the most important number on a fitted sheet; it's also the one most people skip.

Standard vs. Deep vs. Extra Deep Pocket Sheets

There's no official industry standard for bed sheet pocket depth, so every brand labels things a little bit differently, even us over at BEDGEAR. Still, most sheets land in one of three general ranges. To make it all simple, you can use this chart as a starting point, and then check the exact number before you buy.

Pocket Depth at a Glance
Typical pocket depths for standard, deep, and extra deep pocket sheets
Sheet Type Typical Pocket Depth Best For
Standard Up to about 14 inches Thinner mattresses and low-profile beds with no topper
Deep Pocket About 15 to 18 inches Most hybrids, pillow tops, and mattresses with a thin topper or protector
Extra Deep Pocket About 18 to 22 inches or more Very tall mattresses, thick toppers, and stacked layers

Notice the overlap between all the the bed sheet categories. One brand's deep pocket could be another brand's extra deep pocket. That's why measuring your own bed matters more than the name on the package ever does.

Who Needs Deep Pocket Sheets?

Starting with the short answer: anyone whose bed is taller than a standard sheet can handle. In fact it's a lot more common than you'd think. Here are the situations where bed sheets with deep pockets make the biggest difference.

You Have a Pillow Top or Hybrid Mattress

Hybrids stack coils, foam, and comfort layers, and that height adds up fast. Pillow tops add even more on top of it. Therefore, if you sleep on something like our H Performance® Pillowtop Mattress, check the height before you shop for sheets! This can make all the difference.

You Use a Mattress Topper

Do you have a mattress topper on your bed? If so, good luck with your average sheets. A topper is one of the easiest ways to change how your bed feels. It also changes how tall your bed is. Adding something like the React Pro Performance® Mattress Topper can push a regular mattress into deep pocket territory.

You Layer a Mattress Protector

A protector adds a little height and a smoother surface under your fitted sheet. On its own, that's usually not a big deal. Combined with a topper or a thick mattress, on the other hand, and it can be the extra inch that makes your corners pop right off the bed. Our bed protector buying guide walks through your options, and the good news is that most BEDGEAR sheets are accommodating for our protectors. We do make them, after all.

You Sleep on an Adjustable Base

When the head or foot of an adjustable base goes up, the mattress bends, which is good for sleep but terrible for a basic bottom sheet. That pulls on the sheet corners from new angles. The good news is that deeper pocket gives the sheet more slack, so it stays put when you raise and lower the bed.

You're a Restless Sleeper

Tossing and turning puts constant tension on your fitted sheet, and you've probably noticed this when you wake up and your bottom sheet took the night off. A shallow pocket loses that fight pretty quickly. At the end of the night, more fabric under the mattress means a stronger hold through the night.

You Have a Split King Bed Setup

Split kings use two separate mattresses side by side, which sounds great for you but bad for your sheets. Each one needs its own sheet that fits snugly, especially if one side sits on an adjustable base. Before you buy, it's a good idea to check out our guide to split king sheets because we cover everything you need to know about them within it.

If even one of these sounds like your bed, deep pocket sheets are worth a look. From there, the next step is figuring out exactly how much pocket you need.

How to Measure Your Mattress for the Right Fit

Measuring takes about two minutes, and it can save you a return or wasted dollars. So, put on your handy hard hat, grab a tape measure, and follow the steps we list below..

  1. Leave your everyday layers on: Keep the topper and protector in place if they stay on the bed full time.
  2. Measure the side of the bed: Go from the bottom edge of the mattress to the top surface, including every layer.
  3. Add 1 to 2 inches: That extra fabric tucks under the mattress and gives the elastic something to grip.
  4. Compare to the listed pocket depth: Choose a sheet whose pocket depth meets or beats your number.

Don't worry, we won't leave you with a bunch of steps and no examples: a 14-inch mattress with a 2-inch topper measures 16 inches. Add a bit extra for the tuck, and you're looking for a pocket of about 18 inches. Need help with width and length too? Our mattress size guide has every dimension; this way, you don't have to play any guessing games.

What to Look for Beyond Pocket Depth in Bed Sheets

A deep pocket gets the sheet around the mattress, sure, but why settle there? Think about elastic, fabrics that stretch, and even how breathable material might be. At the end of the night, these details help keep your sheets there. They also make a big difference in how the sheet feels once you're in bed, and we cover them in more detail below.

Elastic All the Way Around

Some fitted sheets only put elastic at the corners. Full-perimeter elastic hugs the entire underside of the mattress instead. On a tall bed, that's the difference between a sheet that stays smooth and one that slowly drifts.

Fabric With Some Stretch

Stretchy fabric adapts to small height differences and makes the sheet easier to pull on. It's also forgiving if your topper compresses over time. Our Comfort Stretch collection is built around that idea, so take a look to see if there are any sheets that you like.

Breathable Materials

Taller mattresses often have more foam and more comfort layers. Foam can hold on to body heat, so the fabric on top matters. Look for sheets made to breathe and move moisture away rather than trap it.

That's exactly what we built our deep pocket lineup around. In the chart below, we cover how three deep pocket sheet sets compare.

Signs Your Sheets Don't Fit Your Mattress

Not sure if your current sheets are the problem? We have your back. Your bed will usually tell you, and the most obvious sign is a corner that pops off when you roll over. If you're re-tucking corners every morning, the pocket is too shallow, and it's time for a little deep pocket sheet action.

What's more, watch for bunching and wrinkles in the middle of the bed, too. That happens when the elastic can't reach far enough underneath to hold the fabric tight. You might also see the elastic edge sitting on the side of the mattress instead of under it.

What about sheets that are too deep? Well, that's actually a much smaller problem. More often than not, full elastic takes up most of the slack, and any extra fabric tucks right under. So, when in doubt, go a little deeper rather than a little shallower.

Are Deep Pocket Sheets Right for Your Bed?

If your mattress, topper, and protector add up to more than about 14 inches, the answer is probably yes. Deep pocket sheets give you enough fabric to wrap the whole bed and tuck underneath. That means no more snapping corners and no more midnight tug-of-war with your fitted sheet.

Measure first, add a little room for the tuck, and compare that number to the listed pocket depth. Then choose a fabric that fits how you sleep.

Frequently Asked Questions About Deep Pocket Sheets

Do Deep Pocket Sheets Fit a Regular Mattress?

Usually, yes. Deep pocket sheets with elastic all the way around pull the extra fabric under the mattress, so they sit smoothly on most standard beds. On a very thin mattress you may see a little extra fabric along the sides. Tucking it under the mattress takes care of that in a few seconds.

How Deep Is a Deep Pocket Sheet?

Most brands label a fitted sheet as deep pocket when the pocket measures about 15 to 18 inches. Extra deep pocket sheets typically run from about 18 to 22 inches or more. There is no official industry standard, so always check the exact pocket depth listed on the product page.

Do I Need Deep Pocket Sheets if I Use a Mattress Topper?

Often, yes. A topper adds height to your bed, and a mattress protector adds a little more. Measure the mattress with the topper and protector in place, then add 1 to 2 inches for the tuck. If that number is over about 14 inches, deep pocket sheets are the safer bet.

What Is the Difference Between Deep and Extra Deep Pocket Sheets?

The difference is the height of the side walls. Deep pocket sheets generally fit mattresses around 15 to 18 inches tall, while extra deep pocket sheets are cut for taller beds and stacked layers. Since brands label them differently, compare the listed pocket depth to your own measurement instead of relying on the name.

Are Fitted Sheets and Deep Pocket Sheets the Same Thing?

A deep pocket sheet is a type of fitted sheet. A fitted sheet is the bottom sheet with elastic edges that wraps around your mattress. Deep pocket versions simply have taller sides, so they can reach around thicker mattresses and still tuck underneath.
