Upgrade the Surface Mattress Toppers for Cooling, Comfort, and Pressure Relief When the mattress underneath is still doing its job, sometimes the top is the only part that needs an upgrade.

What Does a Mattress Topper Actually Do?

A mattress topper sits directly on top of your existing mattress and changes how the sleep surface feels. This way, you can alter the bed without swapping out the mattress.

Overall, this makes mattress toppers a pretty useful middle ground. For example, your mattress does not necessarily need replacing, but maybe it sleeps warmer than you would like. On the other hand, maybe the surface feels firmer than it used to or maybe your guest bed is technically acceptable, which is a polite way of saying nobody volunteers to sleep on it.

At the end of the night, mattress toppers give you another layer of cushioning without asking you to start from scratch.

Our React™ Pro Performance® Mattress Topper adds a plush React™ Blend pillow-top layer that conforms to the body for pressure relief. Ver-Tex™ fabric provides a cool-to-the-touch surface, while an Air-X® mesh gusset promotes airflow around the topper.

A Cooling Mattress Topper for Beds That Still Have Life Left

A cooling mattress topper makes the most sense when the mattress underneath is still supportive but the surface could use better temperature management or cushioning, and since it’s not the whole mattress, you can even take it off when things get a little too chilly.

React Pro uses Ver-Tex™ fabric to draw excess heat away from the surface, then adds breathable Air-X® mesh around the perimeter to give that heat somewhere to go. Beneath it, React™ Blend fill provides the softer, conforming feel people are usually looking for when they start shopping for a topper.

And because adding comfort only helps if it stays where you put it, Powerband® grips the mattress to help prevent slipping, shifting, and bunching. The stretch skirt is designed to fit mattresses up to 18 inches deep!

For a deeper look at what toppers can and cannot change, read our Mattress Topper Guide. It covers cooling, pressure relief, mattress lifespan, materials, and when a topper makes more sense than replacing your mattress.

Mattress Topper vs. Mattress Pad

These terms get used interchangeably all the time, but they are not always describing the same thing.

A mattress topper is primarily there to change the comfort and feel of the mattress. It adds noticeable cushioning, support, cooling, or pressure relief. On the other hand, a mattress pad is generally thinner and makes a smaller change to the surface.

And a mattress protector has another job entirely: protecting the mattress from spills, sweat, allergens, and everyday wear. If you are here because your mattress feels a little too firm, too warm, or short on pressure relief, you are looking in topper territory.

Replace the Layer M3 Comfort Layer Replacement If one layer changes, that does not mean the whole mattress suddenly stopped being useful.

What Is a Mattress Comfort Layer?

The comfort layer is the upper internal section of a mattress that your body settles into before your weight reaches the support system underneath.

It handles a lot of the contouring, pressure relief, and surface feel you notice when you lie down. That also means it is one of the parts of a mattress that takes the most direct nightly use.

Most mattresses seal that layer inside permanently.

The M3 does not.

Our M3 Comfort Layer is a removable replacement component built with three layers of ventilated Boost® technology. The construction is designed to respond to the contours of the body while helping channel heat away and circulate air through the mattress.

That is one of the biggest advantages of modular mattress construction: if the comfort layer eventually needs attention, you can address the layer instead of automatically replacing everything underneath it.

Mattress Topper vs. Comfort Layer

This distinction is important because they may look like they solve the same problem.

They do not.

The React Pro Mattress Topper sits on top of a finished mattress. It is an accessory you can add to a compatible mattress when you want more plushness, cooling, or pressure relief.

The M3 Comfort Layer sits inside the M3 Performance® Mattress. It is part of the mattress itself.

If you own a traditional mattress and want to change how its surface feels, start with the topper.

If you own an M3 and need to replace its internal comfort component, you want the M3 Comfort Layer.

That modular design is also why we talk about a mattress as something you can maintain instead of something you simply use until one component gives up. Our Hybrid vs. Memory Foam Mattress Guide explains how replaceable comfort layers change that long-term equation.

Keeping the M3 Comfort Layer Clean

The comfort layer itself separates into two pieces for care.

Its removable cover can be machine washed in cold water on a gentle cycle. The foam insert needs to stay out of the washing machine and should only be spot cleaned with mild detergent and cold water.

If you already own an M3, our M3 & M5 Performance Mattress Setup and Care Guide walks through the full process for the top cover, comfort layer, suspension units, and interior of the mattress.

Change the Support Independent Suspension Units for Personalized Firmness Your comfort preference can change. Your entire mattress does not need to go with it.

What Is an Independent Suspension Unit?

Underneath the comfort layer is where support takes over.

BEDGEAR's Modular Independent Suspension Units use individually wrapped coils that respond independently to pressure while helping limit motion transfer across the mattress. The fabric surrounding the coils is perforated to promote airflow through the support system.

But the bigger idea is personalization. After all, one size does not fit all in the mattress department.

What’s more, the M3 system offers four interchangeable firmness levels:

  • 0.0 — Firm
  • 1.0 — Medium Firm
  • 2.0 — Medium Plush
  • 3.0 — Plush

Each suspension unit replaces one side of the mattress, which means two sleepers can choose different support levels without turning bedtime into a firmness negotiation.

When Your Firmness Preference Changes

Bodies change.

Sleep positions change. Injuries happen. Preferences change. The firmness you loved several years ago may not be the firmness you want now.

On a traditional mattress, changing the support system usually means changing the mattress.

With the modular M3, you can remove the suspension unit on your side and replace it with a different firmness level while keeping the rest of the system intact.

That is a very different relationship with a mattress. You are not locked into the exact setup you chose on day one.

For a closer look inside the system, our Inside the M3 Performance® Mattress article explains how the modular components work together and why the support can be adjusted over time.

Why Individually Wrapped Coils?

A suspension unit is doing more than deciding whether the mattress feels soft or firm.

Individually wrapped coils compress independently instead of forcing the entire support surface to react as one piece. That gives different areas of the body a more targeted response and helps isolate movement between sleepers.

The open space around coils also gives air a path through the center of the mattress, which is one reason hybrid construction approaches airflow differently from solid foam. Still not too sure about all this? No need to worry because we have your back with further reading on wrapped coils.

Start With What Changed Mattress Topper, Comfort Layer, or Suspension Unit? Three products. Three very different jobs.

Which Mattress Accessory Do You Actually Need?

Start with the mattress you already have.

Choose the React Pro Mattress Topper if:

Your mattress is still structurally supportive, but you want a softer surface, better pressure relief, more airflow, or a cool-to-the-touch feel.

It works as a surface-level upgrade and does not require a BEDGEAR M3 mattress.

Choose the M3 Comfort Layer if:

You already own an M3 Performance® Mattress and need to replace or refresh the internal comfort layer.

This is a mattress component, not a universal topper.

Choose an Independent Suspension Unit if:

You own a compatible M3 and want to change the firmness or replace the support unit on one side of the mattress.

This changes the underlying support rather than adding cushioning to the top.

And if the entire mattress is sagging, damaged, or no longer supporting you correctly, an accessory may not be the answer. Our How Often Should You Replace Your Mattress? guide explains when replacing a component makes sense and when the mattress itself has reached the end of the road.

The easiest way to think about it is simple:

Topper = change the surface.

Comfort layer = replace the internal cushioning.

Suspension unit = change the internal support.

No mattress engineering degree required.

Questions Common Questions About Mattress Toppers and Replacement Parts Because “Which part am I actually looking at?” is a completely fair question.
What Does a Mattress Topper Do?

A mattress topper sits on top of your existing mattress to change the feel of the sleep surface. Depending on its construction, it can add cushioning, pressure relief, airflow, or cooling without requiring you to replace the mattress underneath it.

Is a Mattress Topper the Same as a Mattress Pad?

Not necessarily. Mattress toppers are generally thicker and designed to make a more noticeable change to comfort and support. Mattress pads tend to be thinner and provide a lighter surface adjustment.

Is a Mattress Topper the Same as a Mattress Protector?

No. A topper changes comfort. A mattress protector is primarily designed to protect the mattress from moisture, spills, allergens, and everyday wear. Some sleepers use both because they solve different problems.

Is the React Pro Mattress Topper Cooling?

Yes. The React™ Pro Performance® Mattress Topper uses Ver-Tex™ cool-to-the-touch fabric along with an Air-X® mesh gusset designed to promote airflow. Its React™ Blend pillow top adds conforming pressure relief underneath the cooling surface.

Will the React Pro Mattress Topper Fit a Deep Mattress?

The React Pro uses a stretch skirt and Powerband® Secure Fit system designed to grip mattresses up to 18 inches in sidewall height.

Can a Mattress Topper Fix an Old Mattress?

A topper can improve surface comfort, but it cannot repair a mattress with major sagging, structural damage, or a support system that has worn out. If the mattress underneath is still supportive and simply needs better cushioning or cooling, a topper makes much more sense.

What Is the M3 Comfort Layer?

The M3 Comfort Layer is the replaceable internal comfort component of the M3 Performance® Mattress. It uses three ventilated layers of Boost® technology designed to provide responsive comfort while promoting airflow through the mattress.

Can You Wash the M3 Comfort Layer?

The removable comfort layer cover is machine washable. The foam insert itself should only be spot cleaned and should not be placed in a washing machine or saturated with water.

What Is an Independent Suspension Unit?

An Independent Suspension Unit is the replaceable coil-based support component inside the M3 mattress system. Individually wrapped coils respond independently to pressure, while interchangeable units allow sleepers to select different firmness levels on each side of the bed.

What Firmness Levels Are Available for the M3 Suspension Units?

BEDGEAR offers four firmness levels: 0.0 Firm, 1.0 Medium Firm, 2.0 Medium Plush, and 3.0 Plush. Each replacement unit is designed to update one side of the M3 mattress.

Can I Replace Part of My BEDGEAR Mattress Instead of the Whole Mattress?

The modular M3 system is designed with replaceable internal components, including its comfort layer and Independent Suspension units. That means certain changes in comfort or firmness can be addressed at the component level rather than automatically replacing the entire mattress.
